Buying used AI hardware safely

The used market is the only way most people get 80 GB of HBM on a home budget. It is also full of listings that are not what they claim to be, and cards that were never meant to run in a desktop.
None of that means avoid it. It means check a specific list of things before you pay, and know exactly what recourse you have when something goes wrong.
Check the cooling first
Before price, before condition, before anything: is the card passive?
Datacenter cards ship with no fan. NVIDIA’s H100 PCIe brief lists
Thermal solution: Passive and explains that
“It uses a passive heat sink for cooling, which requires system airflow to operate the card properly within its thermal limits”.
In a server that airflow is a wall of air from chassis fans. In a tower with
two quiet intakes, it is not there, and the card throttles.
This applies to the A100 and H100, and to any card whose spec sheet says passive. If you are buying one for a desktop, budget for a shroud and fan kit up front and accept that it will be loud. Our power, cooling, and noise guide covers what that actually costs you.
Read the listing like an adversary
The most common failure is not a scam. It is a listing that technically says what it is, and you read what you wanted to see.
Model suffixes are different products. A 5090 is not a 5090 D. An A100 80GB is not an A100 40GB, and the price gap is enormous. An RX 7900 XTX is not a 7900 XT. Read the title character by character.
Form factor is not cosmetic. SXM cards do not go in a PCIe slot. They are not a cheaper version of the PCIe card; they are a different physical connector for a different kind of chassis. A very cheap “H100” is often an SXM module.
Watch for parts listings dressed as cards. Coolers, shrouds, backplates, and heatsinks all get listed with the card’s full model name in the title. For datacenter cards this is especially common, because the passive shroud is a sellable part on its own. If a price looks impossible, this is usually why.
“For parts”, “as-is”, “untested”, and “box only” mean what they say. These are the phrases our own daily price checks filter out of the catalog before a listing is ever shown on this site.
Price sanity is a real signal. A used card well below the plausible band for its model is not a deal you found first. It is a different product, a different condition, or not a card at all.
What protection you actually have
Buy through a platform with a stated policy, and understand what the policy covers.
eBay’s Money Back Guarantee “covers most transactions on eBay. It means buyers can get their money back if an item didn’t arrive, is faulty or damaged, or doesn’t match the listing”. That last clause is the one that matters here: “doesn’t match the listing” is exactly the 40GB-sold-as-80GB case.
The critical exclusion, in eBay’s own words, is items “paid for where any part of the payment was completed outside of eBay (such as bank transfer, cash, money orders, escrow services)”. A seller who asks you to move the transaction off-platform to save fees is asking you to give up every protection you have. That is the single most expensive mistake available in this market, and it is entirely avoidable.
On counterfeits, eBay’s policy states that when “there are strong indicators that the buyer received a counterfeit item, the buyer must cooperate with us to ensure proper disposal of the item, and must not sell the item on eBay or elsewhere”. Worth knowing before you find yourself holding one: you are not permitted to pass it along.
Warranty almost certainly does not help you
Do not price a used card as though it carries a warranty.
NVIDIA’s support pages state that “An NVIDIA product’s warranty period varies by product line and region”, and that cards bought through partners are “warranted by the partner (Add-In Board partner such as ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, EVGA, or others)”, while “NVIDIA Founders Edition cards are covered directly by NVIDIA”. The process starts with your reseller: NVIDIA’s guidance is to “contact your local distributor or reseller first for warranty and support”.
Notice what that page does not say. It states nothing about whether coverage transfers to a second-hand owner, and describes no tool for checking warranty status from a serial number. We looked; it is not there. So the honest answer is that transferability is a question for the specific board partner, not something you can assume, and a used card should be priced as if it has no coverage at all.
The day it arrives
Photograph the box before you open it, and the card before you install it. A dispute goes better with timestamps.
Then check, in this order:
Is it the model claimed? Before anything else, confirm the card reports
itself correctly. nvidia-smi on NVIDIA, rocm-smi on AMD, or
llama.cpp --list-devices, which the
server README
documents for exactly this purpose: seeing what the runtime can actually see.
The reported name and memory size are your first real evidence.
Does the full memory work? Capacity is what you paid for, so exercise all of it. Load a model large enough to fill the card and watch for errors. A partially bad memory module can pass a trivial load and fail on a real one.
Does it survive sustained load? Run something long enough to reach thermal steady state, not a thirty-second test. Watch temperature and clocks. A card that throttles hard after ten minutes is telling you about its cooling, its thermal paste, or its history.
Does it hold up under real inference? The eventual test is your actual workload. Get a model running per our setup guide and use it.
Do all of this immediately. Platform protections run on a clock, and the worst version of this story is discovering a fault in week five.
Where the used market is genuinely worth it
Datacenter cards, because they have no retail price and no consumer channel: the A100 80GB and H100 80GB PCIe exist for home buyers only as used hardware. You are trading cooling headaches for memory capacity you cannot otherwise afford.
Previous-generation consumer cards, where the RTX 4090 at 24 GB remains genuinely useful and its price is set by a real market rather than by supply constraints.
Compare what you are considering against current new prices on the hardware list before committing. Sometimes the used price is not actually a discount, and that is worth finding out first.
What is not in this guide
No failure-rate statistics for mining cards, and no claim about how long a used card lasts. Those numbers get repeated constantly and we could not source a single one to a study we would stand behind. What we can tell you is what to test, which is more actionable anyway.
No counterfeit-detection walkthrough. NVIDIA’s own authenticity page is a 404, and a visual checklist assembled from forum posts would be us guessing about your specific card.
